External Lync Users Not Able to Join Federated Meetings or Receive Audio on PSTN Calls

PROBLEM

========

I encountered a scenario where external users connecting to Lync via the Edge Server could not connect to federated meetings or did not have audio on calls to/from the PSTN while all other functionality worked, such as IM and presence.

RESOLUTION

============

The root cause was tracked down to being one of the following:

  • Missing firewall rules between the Edge Server internal interface and the Lync FE Servers, SBA, SBS, or internal client subnets. The resolution was to implement the respective firewall rules per this reference link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425891.aspx.

  • Edge Server could not resolve Lync FE Servers, SBA, or SBS via DNS. This was resolved by adding the required host records to the DNS Servers the Edge Server was configured to use or by modifying the local hosts file adding in the respective Server entries.
